It’s hard to believe another school year has come to an end!
As I write this, the days are finally getting longer, gardens are blooming, and many families are preparing for vacations, camps, and a different rhythm of life. My own kids are just finishing up another school year (finally!), and like many of you, I’m looking forward to a little more flexibility in our schedule and more time spent outdoors.
Lately, I’ve noticed something interesting in the clinic. Many patients tell me they expected to feel more relaxed once the end of June arrived, but instead they’re feeling exhausted. After months of school events, sports schedules, work deadlines, and busy family calendars, it can take some time for the body to catch up.
In Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the Fire element and the Heart. It’s a season of activity, connection, joy, and movement. But it’s also a time when people often stay up later, travel more, and pack their schedules with activities. While summer can feel energizing, it’s important to remember that our bodies still need rest and recovery.
One simple way to support your health this season is to enjoy the huge selection of fresh, local fruits and vegetables that are available right now. Peaches and berries are especially wonderful summer foods. They help generate fluids, keep us hydrated, and provide a gentle way to cool the body during the warmer months.
A Favorite Summer Recipe: Peach & Berry Crisp
One of my favorite ways to enjoy summer produce is this simple Peach & Berry Crisp. It’s easy to make, perfect for sharing with family and friends, and highlights some of the best flavors of the season.
Filling
- 4 ripe peaches, sliced
- 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder
Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ¾ cup almond flour or whole wheat flour
- ⅓ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons melted butter or coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Toss the filling ingredients together and spread them into a baking dish.
- Mix the topping ingredients and sprinkle evenly over the fruit.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Why This Recipe Fits with Chinese Medicine
While fresh fruit is one of the joys of summer, Chinese Medicine teaches that large amounts of cold, raw foods can sometimes be difficult to digest- especially for people who struggle with bloating, loose stools, or low energy.
Baking the fruit gently warms it, making it easier on the digestive system while still preserving the fresh, seasonal flavors. Cinnamon adds a subtle warming quality that supports digestion, while oats provide lasting energy.
It’s one of my favorite examples of enjoying seasonal foods in a way that’s both delicious and supportive of overall health.
How Acupuncture Can Help During the Summer
Summer is often one of the busiest times of year, and acupuncture can help your body adapt to those changing demands.
This time of year, I’m commonly treating patients for:
- Stress and anxiety
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Headaches and migraines
- Seasonal allergies
- Digestive concerns
- Sleep difficulties
- Women’s health and fertility support
Acupuncture encourages the nervous system to shift out of “fight or flight” mode and into a state where healing and recovery can happen more naturally. Many patients notice better sleep, improved energy, less pain, and an overall greater sense of well-being after regular treatments.
Wishing You a Healthy Summer
As we move into this new season, I hope you find opportunities to slow down, spend time with people you love, and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that summer brings.
Wishing you a happy, healthy summer!
