Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Wood Snake

Jan 29, 2025

The Chinese Lunar New Year (also called the Spring Festival) marks the beginning of a new year according to the traditional Chinese calendar.

It signifies the end of winter and the beginning of spring, typically lasting for 15 days. This year it falls between today (1/29) and 2/12. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture and is a time when families and friends gather to celebrate.

Years ago (2005, Year of the Rooster!) while studying Chinese Medicine in China, I got to experience what it was like to be part of this holiday tradition. It was so much fun making dumplings with friends, eating a variety of auspicious foods (like noodles, chicken, fish, sweet rice balls, and fruit), and attending lion dances and a lantern festival.

Red decorations were everywhere—inviting happiness and good fortune in—and there was such a positive feeling in the air, as people reconnected and looked forward to a fresh start in the year ahead.

Nourishing Food

This year, we welcome in the Wood snake.

Each year corresponds to one of the 12 zodiac animals, and each animal carries unique qualities that influence the energy of the year ahead. Snakes symbolize wisdom and intuition, reminding us to trust our instincts as we navigate through 2025. Snakes are adaptable and resilient, symbolized by their ability to shed their skin and start again fresh. And the wood element encourages growth, creativity, and flexibility, making this year a perfect time to set new intentions and embrace change.

In Chinese Medicine, we look to begin this new year with good health by aligning our bodies and minds with the rhythms of nature. This can be done by eating nourishing food, doing gentle movement, and participating in mindful rituals. This is also a great time to begin or continue with regular acupuncture treatments, in order to support your health goals for the year ahead.

As we welcome the Year of the Wood Snake, let’s connect with the powerful energies of renewal and transformation it brings. Wishing everyone a prosperous and healthy Lunar New Year!
